A man suspected of belonging to a counterfeiting network was arrested on September 13, 2026, by the territorial brigade of the Ankadinondry Sakay Gendarmerie. Counterfeit banknotes with a total value of 2.61 million ariary were seized. His alleged accomplice is still being sought.
According to information gathered from the Gendarmerie, a private citizen raised the alarm around 10 a.m. He reported the presence of an individual attempting to circulate counterfeit bills at the market. The gendarmes immediately arrived at the scene and set up an operation that led to the suspect’s arrest.
According to initial investigation findings, the perpetrators asked merchants to exchange a 20,000 ariary note for two 10,000 ariary notes. In doing so, they would hand over a counterfeit bill and receive authentic money in return.
During the arrest, the gendarmes discovered 130 counterfeit 20,000 ariary notes and one counterfeit 10,000 ariary note on the suspect, totaling 2,610,000 ariary. The man reportedly confessed to the charges against him.
However, his alleged accomplice managed to escape during the operation. His identity is reportedly known to investigators, who are continuing the search to locate him. The investigation also aims to identify other potential members of the network and determine the origin of the counterfeit banknotes.
