Madagascan photography is crossing a new frontier. Photographer Henitsoa Rafalia will represent Madagascar at the second edition of the Mampala Foto Lubumbashi collective exhibition, organized in the Democratic Republic of Congo from August 29 to September 29, 2026. He will present a series dedicated to the Sambatra, an iconic tradition of the Antambahoaka people, providing an international showcase for Malagasy cultural heritage.
Bringing together thirty-eight artists from diverse backgrounds, this artistic event will be held under the theme “Mijiji: Roots – a return to the essentials, a projection towards the future.” The works presented will invite the public to reflect on the links between cultural heritage, identity, and the future.
For this exhibition, Henitsoa Rafalia will unveil a photographic series dedicated to the Sambatra, the collective circumcision ceremony practiced by the Antambahoaka people in southeastern Madagascar. Through his lens, he highlights an ancestral tradition that testifies to the country’s cultural richness and its importance in the transmission of values and identity.
On social media, the photographer shared his satisfaction in taking part in this major international event. “Honored to cast a gaze on this Malagasy tradition and to contribute, through photography, to the radiance of our cultural heritage beyond our borders,” he wrote. Through this participation, Henitsoa Rafalia will promote Malagasy photography while offering the African and international public an immersion into one of Madagascar’s most emblematic traditions.
