The Ministry of Public Works has announced progress on the rehabilitation of National Road No. 4 (RN4), which connects the capital to Mahajanga. Approximately 20 kilometers of road have been paved on Lot 3, stretching from Andranofasika to Mahajanga (a 65 km segment). This includes the priority 20 km zone designated for asphalt surfacing.
The project, funded by the World Bank with support from the Road Fund (FR), is part of the Sustainable Road Sector Development Project (PDDR). According to the ministry, work is currently underway on the Andranofasika to Marosakoa section. While base layer graveling and tarring are progressing in areas like Berivotra, the overall pace of the project has been criticized for delays.
Despite government claims of improved connectivity, road users continue to report catastrophic conditions between Ankazobe and Mahajanga. Taxi-brousse drivers complain that the journey from Antananarivo to Mahajanga now takes at least 14 hours, with vehicles suffering significant wear and tear due to the bumpy and dusty road conditions. Although 60 km of the 198.75 km total project are slated for paving, the rehabilitation, which began over a year ago, remains behind schedule.
