The village of Soavinandriamanitra Andranovelona, located in the Ambohimanga Rova commune, is gradually transforming. Residents have set up vegetable gardens in their yards and built an exhibition chalet to showcase their crop samples.
“We have become very attentive to the cleanliness of the village and clean it much more often. Those who can afford it are gradually replacing their thatched roofs with sheet metal,” testified Élisabeth Razafinantoandro, a sexagenarian resident, yesterday.
This metamorphosis is only in its early stages. Thanks to the support of the non-governmental organization Synergie d’encadrement pour une volonté engagée (ONG Seve), the locality is on its way to becoming an eco-village. “Our next goals revolve around harmonizing the color of the facades, abandoning oil in favor of shared lighting, and building a facility dedicated to chick rearing,” specifies Élisabeth Razafinantoandro.
According to Nirina Randria, executive director of ONG Seve, an eco-village goes far beyond a simple ecological showcase. “It is above all a social and community approach. It involves identifying local resources to transform them into a common heritage at the service of all,” he explains. For a 5-year program, ONG Seve aims to launch 50 eco-villages throughout Madagascar, support a hundred women’s associations, and develop income-generating activities for 5,000 vulnerable households.
This program includes several constituent elements. “The environment occupies a central place, particularly its protection and restoration. To achieve this, we must integrate the following questions: ‘How to promote sustainable agriculture? How to achieve food self-sufficiency? And what energy sources to use?’. The same applies to water management. How to manage and store waste? For this to bear fruit, these villagers must be autonomous,” explains Sata Maria Rafaraharivelo, regional director of environment and sustainable development for Analamanga. This directorate aims to include this site at the heart of the Ambohimanga Rova tourist circuit.
