The Readnest association is continuing its fundraising efforts to finance the shipment of 2,500 English books donated by supporters in the United Kingdom. The goal is to establish an English-language library in Antananarivo to make these works accessible, particularly to vulnerable populations. The transport and customs clearance of the books require 13,500,000 ariary. So far, fundraising efforts have raised 1,200,000 ariary. To mobilize the public, the association has organized five fundraising weekends, including two at Carrefour and three at Akoor Digue.
According to Readnest, English books remain difficult to access in Madagascar. They are primarily available in large retail stores or online, which limits access for many people. The future library will provide these works to readers for free, with a special focus on vulnerable individuals.
The project goes beyond just providing books. The association also plans to organize training workshops, conferences, an English club, a reading club, and activities for children. The shelves intended to house the books are already available, while the location for the library is still being confirmed.
“Today, the idea is validated and the project is launched. But for this first English library to become a sustainable reality, we need funds and support,” says Finaritra Nancy Ramiandrisoa, president and founder of Readnest. She is also calling on the authorities, the Presidency, businesses, and the entire community of Antananarivo and Madagascar. “It is a project made by and for the Malagasy people, and it is together that we will make it a reality,” she concludes.
