The documentary project “Fitampoha, the return of the King of Menabe,” by Anatole Ramaroson Razafimbelo, was honored at the 2026 Durban FilmMart Awards. This distinction grants him a residency in Morocco dedicated to the film’s post-production.
Malagasy cinema continues its international journey. Director Anatole Ramaroson Razafimbelo has received an award in the FIDADOC Awards category for his documentary project. This recognition provides him with a residency grant in Morocco to continue the post-production of his work, which focuses on a cultural tradition and the history of the restitution of the skull of the Sakalava King Toera.
“I did not expect this award, as our discussions with FIDADOC officials were focused on a completely different subject: La Ruche documentaire,” the director confided. According to him, this recognition opens new perspectives for cinematographic exchanges between Madagascar and Morocco.
Produced by AyeAye Films Dev, the documentary has been in development since 2022. It explores the Fitampoha ceremony in the Menabe region and addresses the restitution of King Toera’s skull. The filmmaker is currently seeking further funding and international co-productions to complete the film and ensure its international distribution.
