Just a few days after the spectacular fire of a truck carrying gas cylinders on National Road 6 (RN6), a new accident has occurred in almost the same location. A dump truck heavily loaded with sand overturned on the road in Ambodipo-Sadjoavato, reigniting concerns about the safety of this particularly accident-prone route.
Accidents are occurring one after another on the RN6, confirming the increase in incidents on this strategic axis. At the entrance to the bridge, the dump truck lost its balance before tipping onto its side following a brake system failure. A large quantity of sand spilled onto the road. According to available information, the ban on trucks over 15 tons transporting sand from the rural commune of Ramena has led this truck to source sand from other areas in the Antsiranana-II region, particularly towards sectors near Ambilobe.
While no serious human casualties have been reported in this latest accident, the succession of incidents is alarming. On this portion of the RN6, traffic conditions, road surface quality, signage, as well as the condition and compliance of vehicles used for transporting heavy materials are all factors that deserve to be examined.
The chain of accidents on this axis brings the issue of controlling vehicles assigned to road works and heavy load transport back to the center of the debate. A sand-loaded dump truck, like any heavy vehicle, must provide sufficient guarantees regarding mechanical condition, stability, and compliance with loading conditions. “How many more accidents will it take before controls on this part of the RN6 are truly strengthened?” reacted Abel Zaka, a resident of Sadjoavato.
The succession of incidents calls more than ever for increased vigilance, both regarding the technical inspection of vehicles and the conditions of heavy load transport, as well as the securing of points considered sensitive. For the moment, users have nicknamed “Ambodipo” the cursed place for heavy goods vehicles.
