QIT Madagascar Minerals (QMM) has temporarily suspended its mining operations at the Mandena site in Tolagnaro following multiple blockades of the access road. In a statement released on Thursday, the company indicated that these disruptions prevent it from ensuring safe access for its employees, partners, and contractors.
“Mining activities have therefore been halted,” QMM specified. Only essential services related to the safety of personnel and the protection of facilities are being maintained, the company added. QMM stated that this decision was made to protect individuals and ensure a safe working environment.
A third blockade of the site’s access road occurred on August 27, according to QMM, which cited barricades set up by “groups of individuals from local communities.” For several weeks, residents of Andranokana, in the commune of Mandromodromotra, have been demanding compensation for agricultural land they claim has been affected by QMM’s infrastructure.
QMM affirms that it remains open to dialogue with the various parties involved and is willing to support initiatives aimed at returning to normalcy. The resumption of mining activities is contingent, according to the company, on the sustainable guarantee of personnel safety and the restoration of free movement to and from Mandena.
