COOPERATION – Japan donates rice worth 300 million yen to be sold to fund development projects

Japanese rice will soon be available on the market. The Malagasy government is set to sell rice donated by Japan, with expected proceeds of 300 million yen—approximately 8 billion ariary—which will be used to fund socio-economic development projects in the country. The exchange of notes for this non-refundable rice donation was signed on Friday at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters in Anosy by Minister of Foreign Affairs Alice N’Diaye and the Ambassador of Japan to Madagascar, Hitoshi Tojima. The Minister of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty, Gaëtan Ramindo, and representatives from the Ministry of Economy and Finance were also present at the ceremony.

As indicated by the Japanese Embassy in its statement, the rice will be sold at a “reasonable price” on the Malagasy market. The socio-economic development projects to be funded by the counterpart funds generated from the sales will be determined through consultation between the two governments. This donation is part of the “2026 Food Assistance Program” implemented by the Japanese government in Madagascar, continuing similar programs that have previously enabled the implementation of numerous development projects.

In its statement, the embassy cited projects under the “Bilateral Economic and Social Development Program for Human Security” as examples. These projects, it recalled, have helped “strengthen food security and the resilience of the agricultural sector” and “improve the living conditions of the population.” The 2026 program aims more broadly to strengthen food security in Madagascar, as the country remains vulnerable to the effects of natural disasters on its agricultural production, particularly droughts in the Grand Sud region, as well as cyclones and floods in the eastern regions.
