To better regulate the mobility of Malagasy workers and address the issue of undocumented Malagasy nationals in Mauritius, Madagascar and Mauritius are strengthening their cooperation in the employment sector. A three-year framework cooperation agreement was signed on Tuesday between the Minister of Labor, Employment and Civil Service, Denis Franconio Mac, and the President of the Mauritius-Madagascar Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIMM), Claudino Rojo Andrianasolo.
The agreement aims to promote employment, enhance the skills of Malagasy workers, and facilitate their access to the Mauritian labor market within a legal and secure framework. Under this cooperation, the ministry will provide administrative and legal support to Malagasy workers wishing to work abroad. It will also be responsible for informing them about job opportunities, monitoring recruitment procedures, and, above all, ensuring the protection of the rights of Malagasy migrant workers.
For its part, the CCIMM will facilitate exchanges between public institutions, businesses, and recruitment stakeholders. It will also contribute to raising awareness of the needs of the Mauritian labor market and available job offers, while supporting the promotion of Malagasy skills on the international market.
This rapprochement follows discussions between the Malagasy Minister of Labor, Employment and Civil Service, Denis Franconio Mac, and the Mauritian Minister of Labor and Industrial Relations, Muhammad Reeza Cassam Uteem, during the latter’s visit to Antananarivo on August 13, following the Moris-Mada Business Connect Summit.
During the meeting, the situation of Malagasy nationals working in Mauritius without documents was discussed. Both parties agreed to seek specific solutions for these workers. The Mauritian minister also expressed the wish to finalize an agreement between Madagascar and Mauritius on professional migration within this year.
Furthermore, both ministries remind Malagasy citizens wishing to work in Mauritius of the importance of holding a work permit. Mauritian employers are also urged not to recruit Malagasy workers via tourist visas.
