Health centers are experiencing a shortage of Mpox vaccines. Authorities have announced the imminent arrival of thirty thousand new doses.
Disappointment prevails in health centers as those seeking vaccination against Mpox are being turned away. Doses have been unavailable at clinics for several days. “At first, I didn’t believe much in this disease, but after seeing colleagues fall ill, I realized I needed to protect myself. I came to get vaccinated, but I was told to return in a few days. The wait is causing me significant stress, given how quickly the disease is spreading,” a transport worker said yesterday.
According to Professor Jean de Dieu Mamy Randria, incident manager at the Public Health Emergency Operations Center (Cousp), speaking on Monday during an update on the epidemic’s progress, vaccine stocks are depleted.
Official figures currently indicate that 99,000 people have been vaccinated against Mpox. However, the Expanded Program on Immunization (DPEV) at the Ministry of Public Health estimates the actual number of vaccinated individuals to be between 120,000 and 140,000. This data remains incomplete as some remote basic health centers have not yet been able to transmit their figures.
It took more than three months to exhaust the 30,000 vaccine doses received in March. The vaccination campaign started slowly with low turnout. “We received doses to vaccinate 140,000 people, but we were initially at fewer than 10,000 vaccinated,” said Dr. Laurent Musongo, World Health Organization (WHO) Representative in Madagascar, during the World Health Day ceremony at the Barea Stadium in Mahamasina on April 7.
The Only Weapons
With the spread of cases, now exceeding two thousand confirmed infections in six months and a dozen deaths, public interest in the vaccine is growing. Unfortunately, the vaccine is unavailable at this time. However, this situation is expected to be resolved soon.
“Barring any setbacks, the next shipment is expected on July 5. This second batch should provide 30,000 additional vaccine doses,” stated Dr. Tsivahiny Paubert, Director of the Expanded Program on Immunization (DPEV). These new doses will allow for the vaccination of nearly 140,000 people. Pending this delivery, vigilance and strict adherence to protective measures remain the only tools available to curb the epidemic. Mpox is transmitted through close contact with an infected person.
Fifty New Confirmed Cases
The latest official report from the Ministry of Public Health indicates an acceleration of infections across the country. According to the latest situation report published by the Cousp on June 30, 2026, 50 new cases have been officially confirmed nationwide. These cases are distributed in Toamasina I and II, Maintirano, Tolagnaro, Antsirabe, Vatomandry, and Mandoto. With these new cases, the cumulative total since December 2025 has reached 2,459. Additionally, 61 new suspected cases have been reported.
