ENVIRONMENT – Natural disasters claim 800 lives

Madagascar pays a particularly heavy human toll in the face of natural disasters. Over the past decade, these events have claimed the lives of 803 people, affected nearly 2.36 million others, and destroyed 132,000 homes, according to remarks made yesterday by Ji Ping, the Chinese Ambassador to Madagascar. The statement was delivered during a ceremony held at the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Nanisana, where equipment was handed over to strengthen the capacity of key national institutions in disaster risk management.

“Madagascar has long been one of the countries most exposed to cyclones and most severely affected by their consequences globally,” the ambassador emphasized. In this context, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), with financial support from the Government of the People’s Republic of China, has provided equipment and materials valued at a total of $461,629 to the National Bureau for Risk and Disaster Management (BNGRC), the General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM), and the Prevention and Emergency Management Support Unit (CPGU). This support is part of the TIAEWS (Tailored Intelligence for Actionable Early Warning Systems) project, an initiative designed to address the specific needs of Madagascar, a country particularly vulnerable to cyclones, floods, and droughts.

“We hope that the equipment we are handing over today will strengthen each institution’s capacity to share information in real-time, and will contribute not only to saving lives but also to improving the quality of life for people affected by various events across the country,” said Edward A. Christow, UNDP Resident Representative in Madagascar.
