Solar energy production is on the rise. Jirama has announced the injection of an additional 2 MW into the Antananarivo Interconnected Grid (RIA) this week. This contribution comes from the new solar park in Ilafy, which has officially begun its startup phase.
While this commissioning is positive news, particularly during this low-water period that reduces hydroelectric plant output, the full potential of these infrastructures remains limited by current weather conditions. In the austral winter, the efficiency of solar plants drops significantly. “When the weather is overcast, production decreases substantially,” notes a source within Jirama.
According to data from the Ministry of Energy and Hydrocarbons (MEH), the total solar power injected into the RIA reached 12.5 MW by the end of May. This capacity is distributed across four key sites: Mangatany (5 MW), Ampangabe (5 MWp), Ambatomirahavavy (1.5 MWp), and Ambohidrano Ilafy (currently 2 MWp).
The energy transition is still in the deployment phase. Whether in Ilafy, Ambatomirahavavy, Mangatany, or Ampangabe, none of these sites are fully completed. The facilities have begun to produce electricity progressively while awaiting the finalization of all construction works.
