The total overhaul of the electoral roll in Mahajanga, as across the entire territory, has entered an active phase since the official launch of the national operation by the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI). Local voter census committees (CLRE) are working in various fokontany to register new voters. The operation, launched on July 28, is ongoing in the field.
As of October 1, 1,600 biometric booklets from the fokontany have already reached the district electoral commissions of Mahajanga 1 and 2. These booklets represent 40,000 registered voters, which is 25% of the target of 160,000 voters.
“The appointments of fokontany chiefs experienced some delay in Mahajanga, but results are already being collected by the District Computer Center (CID) and the District Electoral Commission (CED). As proof, 1,600 biometric booklets have been received by the district electoral commissions of Mahajanga 1 and 2. This represents 40,000 registered voters, a rate of 25%. The goal is to reach 160,000 voters. About fifteen data entry operators have been mobilized,” stated Manassé Fanomezantsoa Andriasamimanana, president of the Regional Computer Center (CIR) of the Mahajanga 1 district.
According to the latest official data published before the launch of the current total overhaul, the Mahajanga I district had 140,560 registered voters after the closure and finalization of the revised electoral roll. The reform provides for a general revision of the lists, including the removal of duplicates, updating voter information, and integrating new registrations.
In Mahajanga, registration is primarily carried out through home visits conducted by mandated census agents. Fixed counters are also open in the offices of each fokontany. Mobile teams have also been deployed in high-traffic areas of the city, particularly in various markets, bus stations, and universities.
