New leadership for the Urban Commune of Antsirabe. Fidy Andriatomponera, former Director of General Affairs for the Vakinankaratra region, officially took office as the President of the Special Delegation of Antsirabe this Thursday. He will be assisted by two vice-presidents, Firmin Andriamaro and Christian Razafindrafito, in managing the municipality. The handover ceremony with the acting mayor, Andrianomanana Rakotondrabe, took place on the same day.
The appointment of the special delegation ends several months of vacancy at the head of the commune. Since the resignation of Mayor Hugo Rasamimanana in May, followed by the death of the acting mayor, Colonel Roland Rakotoson, the municipality had been administered by the second deputy mayor, whose duties were limited to managing current affairs.
A well-known figure in the Vakinankaratra region, Fidy Andriatomponera previously served as deputy head of the Antsirabe district. He is also the president of the Vakinankaratra Regional Football League. His appointment comes amid high social tensions within the Urban Commune of Antsirabe. Since Wednesday, employees have been on strike and have closed the municipal offices to demand the payment of their salaries.
The Union of Employees of the Urban Commune of Antsirabe (Secua) claims that some agents have accumulated up to 17 months of salary arrears. According to the union, employees were already owed 14 months of unpaid wages before the resignation of Mayor Hugo Rasamimanana on May 11. Salaries for May, June, and July have since been added to these arrears.
