Acts of vandalism and degradation of public property persist in the capital. The Urban Commune of Antananarivo (CUA) is reiterating the rules in force.
Damage to public property is multiplying in Antananarivo. Concrete garden borders are regularly vandalized, while thefts of traffic signs, pipes, and metal parts are recurring on several road infrastructures. The CUA reaffirms that it will show zero tolerance toward those who damage public property. Concrete covers for drainage canals are also among the targeted equipment.
Reinforced with iron frames, some are broken or torn off to recover the metal. These degradations leave dangerous openings on public roads, exposing pedestrians to risks of falling and worsening sanitation problems. The situation is particularly visible in Tsaralalana, Ankadimbahoaka, Mahamasina, and Anosy.
“In Ambohimiandra as well, when traffic is less dense, especially early in the morning, some people collect gravel from the roads,” testifies a local resident.
These repeated degradations have already caused the subsidence of certain roads and bridges, endangering users. “Every piece of equipment destroyed or stolen penalizes citizens. Roads become more dangerous and repairs are costly,” laments Ravelonahiana, a local resident.
The Urban Commune of Antananarivo (CUA) reminds that it is the only authority empowered to issue authorizations for any intervention on public property. Whether it concerns construction work, modifications, demolitions, or road closures, prior authorization is mandatory.
In a statement released yesterday, the municipality specified that any person or company that has carried out work on public roads must restore the premises to their original state, in accordance with current standards. “Everyone must understand that public property belongs to everyone. Damaging it or intervening without authorization penalizes the entire population,” says Narindra, a downtown merchant.
