The water supply issue in the southern part of Antananarivo is gradually being resolved, with water production increasing in the area. The Compact Treatment Unit (UCT) in Tanjombato, operational since July 8, produces 100 m³ per hour, totaling 2,400 m³ of drinking water per day. This infrastructure strengthens the supply for Tanjombato, Andoharanofotsy, Ankaraobato, Ifarihy, Mahalavolona, Ankadilalampotsy, Volotara, and Tongarivo, as well as surrounding localities.
This infrastructure was implemented under the Drinking Water Access Improvement Project (PAAEP), overseen by the Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (MEAH) and the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), and funded by the World Bank Group.
The PAAEP ensures water potability. The unit treats water through several stages, including cleaning, filtering, and disinfection to make it completely safe for consumption. The water produced meets national potability standards and those of the World Health Organization (WHO). Furthermore, its quality is tested regularly by the Jirama laboratory and confirmed by the Institut Pasteur de Madagascar.
Other projects, including Tana Water III, for which infrastructure installation is currently underway, are expected to improve the water supply in the southern part of Antananarivo by 2027.
