LYNCHING IN MAINTIRANO – The Ministry of Justice defends the presumption of innocence

The presumption of innocence is the core message of the statement released yesterday by the Ministry of Justice following the mob violence that occurred in Maintirano. The text reiterates that no one can be considered guilty without a full investigation and a judgment rendered by a competent court.

The Ministry firmly condemns the lynching, describing it as a serious violation of the law, and emphasizes the role of magistrates and law enforcement agencies, who are the only ones authorized to conduct investigations and impose sentences.

This reminder follows a period of heightened tension. Marie Louise Floria Ravaoharimalala, a cash point manager, was found dead on July 10 after disappearing the previous day. According to investigators, she was the victim of an extremely violent murder.

The anger of the residents and the victim’s relatives erupted. Denany, a man arrested by the National Police and suspected of involvement, was handed over to the crowd. He was lynched and burned alive on Sunday afternoon, despite the presence of law enforcement.

While the police officers were not directly attacked, several pieces of infrastructure sustained damage.
