ANJOZOROBE – Fire destroys two houses

Two residential houses were destroyed by a fire in Anjozorobe last weekend, leaving nine members of the same family homeless. Initial assessments estimate the damage at five million ariary.

The tragedy occurred in the Antsorindrana fokontany, in the commune of Betsimizara, Anjozorobe district. The fire broke out around 8 a.m. It is believed that the flames originated from a spark in a cooking hearth. According to reports, a young boy was cooking beans at the home when the fire started, quickly spreading to the dry thatched roof.

Witnesses stated that the fire spread rapidly, completely ravaging the first house. All belongings inside, including clothing, household items, and money, were reduced to ashes. Due to strong winds, the fire spread to neighboring dwellings, affecting a second house nearby. Both houses were constructed of brick with thatched roofs.

Gendarmes arrived promptly at the scene. Security forces and local residents joined efforts to fight the blaze, taking over an hour to fully extinguish it. No injuries or deaths were reported.

“Nine of us from the same family are now homeless. Everything we worked years to acquire has turned to ash. We are asking for help,” said the mother of the affected family.
