It took several hours to extinguish the flames. A major bush and forest fire broke out on Sunday afternoon in Andranofeno Sud, on National Road No. 4 (RN4). Fanned by strong gusts of wind, the fire crossed the road, temporarily disrupting traffic. About forty people were mobilized to prevent its spread. The disaster is now under control, but it has ravaged nearly ten hectares of vegetation, including an eucalyptus plantation.
The fire started in Antsevabe, in the fokontany of Andranofeno Sud, within the rural commune of Tsaramasoandro. According to the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development (MEDD), weather conditions significantly complicated the extinguishing operations. Strong winds favored the rapid spread of flames on both sides of the RN4, while a thick cloud of smoke severely reduced visibility. As a safety measure, traffic was temporarily interrupted to limit the risk of accidents.
Faced with the scale of the disaster, about forty people, including residents, members of the Bush Fire Fighting Committee, elements of the National Gendarmerie, and local authorities, mobilized to contain the fire. Thanks to this coordinated intervention, the fire was brought under control before it could spread further.
According to an initial assessment by the ministry, about ten hectares of bush were destroyed, as well as an eucalyptus plantation. The ministry has opened an investigation to determine the origin of the fire, although the exact circumstances of the start of the fire remain difficult to establish.
During this season prone to bush fires, the ministry calls on the population to redouble their vigilance in the use of fire. It recalls that the prevention and fight against fires are a collective responsibility and invites anyone who witnesses an intentional fire to report it immediately to law enforcement. Finally, it emphasizes that the perpetrators of such acts are exposed to heavy sanctions provided for by law.
