The 2026-2027 school year officially began yesterday, marked by a significant reform of the school curriculum.
A new curriculum has come into effect in public schools for the 2026-2027 academic year. According to the principal of a General Education College (CEG), a new ‘study program’ has replaced the old one, and teachers are already using the provided documents for their pedagogical preparations. The Minister of National Education stated in the preface that this reform aims to enhance the quality of teaching and learning.
The reform introduces major changes, including new subjects. In secondary education, ‘Arts’ is introduced from T7 to T9. ‘Civic Education’ is replaced by ‘Fanabeazana ho Olom-pirenenana Vanona’ (FOV) from T6 to T9, now taught in Malagasy. From T10 to T11, this becomes ‘Citizenship Education’ (EAC). Additionally, ‘Economic and Social Sciences’ (SES) and ‘Information and Communication Technology in Education’ (TICE) are introduced from T10 to T12.
Instructional hours have also been adjusted; for instance, History and Geography have increased to 4 hours per week each for the first cycle of secondary school, up from 2 hours previously. The curriculum now focuses on learning outcomes, emphasizing practical activities, mini-projects, and student research.
However, the reform has caught some schools off guard. Principals report challenges in adjusting schedules on short notice and finding qualified teachers for new subjects like ‘Arts’. Educators also expressed concerns regarding the lack of textbooks, teaching materials, and laboratory equipment, which could hinder the effective implementation of the new program.
