Poorly parked vehicles remain numerous on several streets in Antananarivo. Occupied sidewalks, double-parked cars, or vehicles parked on the roadway: despite measures taken in recent months, bad habits persist.
In the 67 Ha district, residents point to the difficulty of finding a parking space. “There is no more parking, but we have to park somewhere,” says Solonantenaina, a local resident.
However, the lack of space does not explain all violations. Some vehicles occupy sidewalks, forcing pedestrians onto the road. Others are parked in front of gates, blocking access to homes. Double parking also slows down traffic, especially on narrow streets.
The phenomenon also concerns vehicles that remain immobilized for several days in the same spot. “There are cars that stay in the same place for a long time. Sometimes we don’t even know who they belong to,” says a local resident.
The Urban Commune of Antananarivo (CUA) has already taken measures to combat these practices. The use of wheel clamps is among the measures applied to offending vehicles. Cars can also be towed and taken to the impound lot when they are abandoned or parked irregularly.
On the ground, however, obstructive parking remains frequent. It continues to disrupt traffic and reduce space reserved for pedestrians. The effectiveness of the measures put in place therefore remains to be proven.
