Authorities are stepping up the fight against the use of non-compliant lighting on vehicles and two-wheelers. During a press conference organized by the Vehicle Technical Inspection Center, officials announced a five-day grace period for users to remove all illegal lighting devices. After this period, sanctions will be applied during road checks.
According to Squadron Leader Jacques Didier Rakotondramanana, head of the communication service at the Technical Inspection Center, drivers are not permitted to use lights that may dazzle other road users. These devices reduce the visibility of oncoming drivers and increase the risk of accidents.
Lieutenant-Colonel Rija Alberto Rakotomampianina, head of the operations and surprise road technical inspection service, specified that LED lights or strobe lamps added after vehicle manufacturing are prohibited. This includes spotlights installed on the rear of trucks, non-homologated fog lights, and flashing or high-intensity lights. These devices, often installed outside manufacturer standards, are considered dangerous for road safety.
Officials noted that while vehicles are generally compliant during technical inspections, some owners reinstall prohibited lighting equipment afterward, in violation of regulations. To end this practice, users have five days to remove these non-regulatory lights. Following this deadline, road control teams will begin issuing fines.
Taking advantage of the school holiday period, authorities also called on motorists and two-wheeler riders to exercise caution and civic responsibility. They urge them to respect the Highway Code, adopt responsible driving habits, use necessary protective equipment, and ensure the good mechanical and technical condition of their vehicles. Finally, authorities reiterate that respecting traffic rules and individual vigilance remain essential to preventing accidents. Their message is unequivocal: “Life is priceless.”
