ATHLETICS – PORTRAIT – Ny Aina Anna Andrianjafy at the dawn of a promising career

Approaching her 19th birthday, Ny Aina Anna Andrianjafy is already establishing herself as one of the great hopes of Malagasy athletics. A specialist in the 400m and 400m hurdles, the young athlete just secured an impressive haul of nine gold medals at the national championships this past weekend. Behind these performances lies a clear ambition: to one day represent Madagascar at the World Championships and, above all, the Olympic Games.

On the track, Ny Aina Anna Andrianjafy made a strong statement during the Madagascar championships. In the youth category, she clinched four gold medals in the 400m flat, 400m hurdles, 4x100m, and 4x400m. A few days later, during the senior and all-category championships, she added five more victories to her record: 200m, 400m, 400m hurdles, 4x100m, and 4x400m, totaling nine national titles in one week.

This progress did not happen overnight. In 2023, during the Indian Ocean Island Games held in Madagascar, Aina had already contributed to the gold medal in the 4x400m relay. More recently, she wrote a new chapter in her young career in Mauritius at the Southern Africa U18 and U20 Championships. Competing in the U20 400m hurdles, she won with a time of 1:04.15, giving Madagascar its only gold medal of the competition. She also took bronze in the 400m with a time of 58.35.

Standing 1.65m tall, the eldest of four children and the only girl in the family, she moves forward with quiet determination. Her daily life is precisely scheduled. Mornings are dedicated to training, while afternoons are reserved for classes and study. “Studies are just as important as sports,” she explains, aware that an athlete’s career can be short and that one must prepare for life after the track.

On the track, Aina knows there is still significant room for improvement. Her current records are 56 seconds in the 400m flat and 1:04.15 in the 400m hurdles. It is precisely in this latter event that she intends to improve further. “I still need to perfect my hurdle clearance technique,” she acknowledges.

But behind these performances lies a greater ambition: to one day participate in the World Championships and, above all, the Olympic Games. As she approaches her 19th birthday, Ny Aina Anna Andrianjafy is already collecting titles and medals on Malagasy tracks. The young hurdler is patiently continuing her progress, with the biggest international competitions in her sights. The Malagasy track may well have found one of its future leading figures.
