Minister of Energy, Luca Andoniriana Rabearimanga, was dispatched to Antsiranana over the weekend to assess the situation and accelerate the implementation of solutions.
During a meeting with relevant civil and military officials, and a site visit to the Amporaha thermal power plant, the Minister emphasized the need for rapid and appropriate measures. The priority is to provide a quick response to power outages to meet the population’s urgent needs. However, this response must also be sustainable. He stressed the importance of reducing the city’s dependence on a single electricity producer, a situation identified as one of the main causes of the current crisis.
With this in mind, the Jirama thermal power plant in Amporaha has been restarted. New engines have already been installed, with further equipment pending. To date, eleven engines have arrived in Antsiranana. Five of them are already operational, currently producing a total power of 3 MW.
Rapid solutions underway. Currently, ENELEC is producing only 3 MW due to failures affecting all its machines in service. However, according to the initial contract, this company was expected to supply 18 MW for Antsiranana, while the city’s real needs are estimated at 11 MW.
To accelerate the resolution of the crisis, new containerized units capable of producing 2.7 MW are expected this Tuesday. Unlike the six new engines that required the prior construction of a reinforced concrete hangar, these units can be installed directly on a prepared site.
Furthermore, another high-capacity unit capable of producing 2.4 MW is expected to arrive later. The objective is to reach a total production of 12.1 MW to fully cover Antsiranana’s electricity needs, excluding Enelec’s production. The Minister stated that power outages in Antsiranana should be resolved in the near future, once all production engines are installed and fully operational, without specifying an exact date.
For the population, this visit must go beyond mere observation. Residents expect concrete, visible, and progressive responses capable of reducing the duration of outages. In Antsiranana, electricity has become a social and economic emergency, as power shedding hampers activities, weakens incomes, and slows down essential services.
