The 6th arrondissement of Antananarivo has a new community space. The Kianja Kanto Antsararay was inaugurated on June 17 as part of the Antananarivo Urban Nursery Project (PUA), implemented by GRET in partnership with the Urban Commune of Antananarivo (CUA) and funded by the French Development Agency (AFD).
Located in the heart of the Ambohimanarina neighborhood, the site has been rehabilitated to meet the needs of residents. A multi-sport field, a meeting area, and a laundry basin for washerwomen now make up this complex, designed to foster social cohesion and improve the living environment of the inhabitants.
For Fenohenintsoa Ralambomanana, President of the Special Delegation of the CUA, this achievement is in line with the vision of a cleaner and more inclusive city. “This space was designed to bring residents together, strengthen solidarity, and allow talents to express themselves. The project also aims to improve the working conditions of washerwomen and provide young athletes with a healthy environment for their activities,” he emphasized.
Present at the inauguration, the French Ambassador to Madagascar, Arnaud Guillois, reiterated the commitment of French cooperation to the capital. “This is a modest project, but one with concrete benefits for the population. Our presence testifies to the support provided to the Malagasy public authorities. A new agreement for the Padeve program will be signed shortly,” he indicated.
One of the unique features of the Kianja Kanto is the attention given to washerwomen. Thanks to the newly installed basin, their working conditions have been improved. “This place is not reserved only for sports. We, the washerwomen, now have our own space thanks to the basin installed. I thank the Urban Commune for thinking of us,” testified Rafarasoa.
Local sports stakeholders also welcomed this new infrastructure. For Jean Félix Andrianantenaina, coach of the Lucadro club, this field will contribute to the progress of local clubs. “This multi-sport field will bring a lot to the local population and allow local teams to improve their performance,” he stated.
