Access to the University of Antananarivo campus is now under surveillance. University security agents are systematically checking individuals entering through the gates, requiring student IDs or other supporting documents. “We have been securing the entrance since March. This measure has been reinforced following suspicions of child and person abductions,” stated Andriamihaja Rasolofo, Deputy Head of the Security Service at the University of Antananarivo, yesterday.
Criminals are reportedly operating within the university grounds, often posing as others to steal items, primarily mobile phones. “Since the beginning of this year, we have recorded about fifteen complaints,” the official added, noting that many victims do not file formal reports.
The campus has also become a shortcut for local residents, turning it into an ideal hunting ground for criminals. “Local residents should use public roads instead of cutting through the campus,” the source continued. To enhance student safety, the presidency of the University of Antananarivo has decided to restrict course hours. Classes will now start at 7:00 AM and must conclude by 5:00 PM.
