Limited results. The cloud seeding operations conducted in recent days in the Andekaleka watershed have not produced the expected rainfall. According to meteorological technicians, temperatures slightly above seasonal norms recorded during the 2026 winter are complicating the conditions necessary for these interventions, which are intended to support the dam’s water level and the hydroelectric production supplying the Antananarivo Interconnected Network (RIA).
The operations are in their third day this Friday and are scheduled to continue on Saturday. Four interventions are planned for this week. According to the technicians, higher-than-normal temperatures reduce the conditions favorable for the formation of artificial precipitation. The rain obtained primarily serves to maintain the dam’s water level to avoid an interruption in electricity production.
According to Jirama, the water level of the Andekaleka dam “must not drop below 357.7 meters to ensure the continuity of electricity production.” During the low-water season, these cloud seeding operations aim to support the operation of hydroelectric power plants and strengthen electricity production on the RIA. Meteorological technicians indicate that in winter, they consist of seeding clouds to promote precipitation. The interventions are carried out in the morning, a period considered the most conducive to their effectiveness.
