MINING – Burkina Faso inaugurates its first gold refinery in Ouagadougou

With an initial capacity of 164 tonnes of gold per year, potentially reaching 515 tonnes in the long term, Burkina Faso has inaugurated its first gold refinery in Ouagadougou. The ceremony was attended by Captain Ibrahim Traoré, President of the Transition, who has been in power since 2022.

Named the National Gold Refinery of Burkina Faso (Raffinor), the facility aims to allow the country to process a larger portion of its gold production domestically rather than exporting raw materials. It also seeks to further develop the mining value chain within the national territory.

“Our ambition is no longer to be just a country that extracts and sends its raw materials abroad. We want to refine all our metals locally… we want to have the entire value chain on-site,” the Burkinabe presidency stated, quoting Ibrahim Traoré during the inauguration.

Construction of the refinery began in late November 2023. According to the presidency, the project cost over 11 billion CFA francs, funded by the Burkinabe state in partnership with the national private sector. Official figures indicate the refinery is expected to generate 100 direct jobs and 5,000 indirect jobs.

Burkina Faso is one of the leading gold producers in sub-Saharan Africa. According to data from the Burkinabe Ministry of Mines, more than 94 tonnes of gold were produced in the country in 2025.
