Ultimatum. Motorists and motorcyclists have five days, starting this Saturday, to remove non-compliant lighting devices installed on their vehicles. Following this grace period granted by the General Directorate of Road Safety (DGSR), reinforced checks will be conducted, and offenders will face sanctions.
This grace period follows the publication last week of a statement from the Ministry of Transport and Meteorology, reminding the public of the ban on using lighting that does not comply with regulations. The DGSR reiterated this ban on Saturday, specifying that it is based on the new highway code and regulatory texts governing vehicle lighting equipment.
According to Lieutenant-Colonel Rija Alberto Rakotomampianina, head of operations and surprise technical road checks, all added lighting devices not provided by the manufacturer are covered by this ban. He specifically mentions spotlights installed on the back of trucks, unapproved fog lights, added LED lamps, strobe lights, as well as flashing or high-intensity lights.
Squadron Leader Jacques Didier Rakotondramanana, head of the communication service at the Technical Inspection Center, explains that this equipment can dazzle other road users and increase the risk of accidents.
In its statement published on its Facebook page, the DGSR indicates that these devices are generally removed before mandatory technical inspections but are often reinstalled once the inspection is completed, in violation of regulations. It therefore invites owners of vehicles and two-wheelers to remove them within the five-day period, before the launch of control operations and the application of planned sanctions.
