Two more victims of the traffic accident that occurred on Tuesday afternoon at the Ambohidahy tunnel have succumbed to their injuries. They were among the six people still being treated at the Joseph Ravoahangy Andrianavalona Hospital (HJRA).
According to a report provided by a source at the facility on Wednesday morning, the victims are two women, aged 70 and 65, bringing the total death toll from the tragedy to four. The two women, who were friends and were inside the tunnel at the time, passed away minutes apart after receiving intensive care. The first died around 6:30 PM and the second around 7:00 PM. Four other people remain hospitalized at HJRA and are currently receiving care.
Meanwhile, the driver of the ‘taxi-be’ (public minibus) who struck the pedestrians remains in police custody. The date for his appearance before the prosecutor has not yet been set. A source from the national police, who is in charge of the preliminary investigation, explained that the timing may depend on the questioning of the victims. “The driver’s interrogation is ongoing, and the victims will also be questioned,” the source stated. “If the police believe the evidence is not yet sufficient, they will request an extension of the detention from the prosecutor or the deputy prosecutor in charge of the case,” they added, noting that the police do not decide on detention extensions unilaterally.
