Sanitation: 3,000 people paid to clean the Fokontany of Manarintsoa Atsinanana and Andavamamba Anjezika

Cleaning their neighborhood while receiving money, rice, and school supplies. On Saturday, 3,000 people participated in a mass sanitation operation organized by the Fanjiry association in Manarintsoa Atsinanana and Andavamamba Anjezika. The operation aims not only to clean the neighborhoods before the rains but also to ensure the sustainability of these efforts through the use of “dina” (local community pacts).

Beyond the high labor intensity, the operation is based on the “cash-for-work” principle. Each of the 3,000 participants received 20,000 ariary for a few hours of work. This initiative by the Fanjiry association provided income to workers in need while addressing the local urgency of preparing the Fokontany, particularly low-lying areas, for the upcoming rainy season. The work primarily involved clearing wastewater drainage canals to facilitate rainwater runoff.

For Olga Ramiarinjanahary, national coordinator of Fanjiry, the real challenge begins after the cleanup. She called on local Fokontany leaders to be strict, emphasizing the importance of “dina.” These community rules allow for the collective establishment of obligations and penalties for non-compliance. The goal is to empower residents and prevent waste from quickly accumulating again. She also reminded residents to maintain the cleanliness of the sanitized areas.

In addition to the mass sanitation, Fanjiry distributed 15 tons of rice, school supplies, and trash bins to the affected Fokontany.
