The world of Malagasy music is in mourning. Papa James, the singer known for hits such as “Ngôma Hoe” and “Tiako anao Tsiah,” has passed away at the age of 76 in South Africa, where he had been living for several decades. He leaves behind a long career dedicated to Malagasy music.
Born Mayoub Caid Jean Gaby and nicknamed “Gaby,” Papa James was originally from Antsiranana. He was renowned for his talents as a musician and drummer, particularly during the 1970s and 1980s. His tracks have left a mark on and inspired generations of Malagasy people to dance. For over thirty years, he lived and worked in Durban, South Africa, alongside Mama James, who operated a restaurant there.
During the June 30th protests, the couple fell victim to looting amid anti-migrant demonstrations in Durban. Their restaurant was completely ransacked, an ordeal that deeply affected the musician, according to those close to him.
