The fourth edition of Ant’Sary Doc Mada is expanding its horizons with seventeen works selected from ten countries and territories, while hosting the DOC OI Writing Residency in Madagascar for the first time.
The documentary festival opens up to new perspectives for its fourth edition, scheduled from September 25 to October 3, 2026, in Antananarivo. This year, seventeen works from ten countries and territories have been selected, giving this edition a strengthened international dimension. The program features films from Madagascar, Niger, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Republic of Congo, Morocco, Egypt, Benin, Senegal, Mayotte/France, and Mauritius.
The selection includes ten short documentary films in competition, six feature-length documentaries, and one digital experience. The selected works offer various perspectives on memory, identity, migration, culture, territory, social transformation, and contemporary issues. Selection criteria focused on the quality and uniqueness of the documentary gaze, the originality of the author’s point of view, and the strength and relevance of the subject matter.
This fourth edition is also marked by a first in Madagascar. From September 28 to October 2, at the French Institute of Madagascar (IFM), the festival will host the first week of the DOC OI Writing Residency, dedicated to emerging documentary writing. About ten Malagasy authors will be able to develop their documentary projects, refine their writing, and test their approaches against the insights of industry professionals.
Screenings of the competing films will take place on September 25 and 26 at IFM Analakely. The writing residency will run from September 28 to October 2, followed by the Indian Ocean Co-production Forum on October 3. The day will conclude with a closing ceremony starting at 6:00 PM at IFM Analakely, featuring the presentation of awards and a meeting with participants and guests.
According to festival director Anatole Ramaroson, this residency is one of the festival’s main innovations: “It aims to create a link between the distribution of works and the support of authors who will participate in writing the documentaries of tomorrow. It will also strengthen exchanges between Madagascar and other territories in the Indian Ocean.”
The program also includes the Indian Ocean Co-production Forum, dedicated to exploring collaboration opportunities between professionals and seeking partners for Malagasy film projects. This initiative is supported by the Indian Ocean (Co)Production Lab (PIOLA) project, launched this year by the Asa Sary Association – Filmmakers of Madagascar.
