FOOTBALL – FIFA admits ‘errors’, offers ‘apologies’ but reaffirms ‘full support’ for Gianni Infantino

Beset by criticism following its aborted plan to open up to private investors, FIFA leadership has acknowledged “errors” and offered “apologies.” However, it expressed “full support” for President Gianni Infantino on Wednesday following a crisis meeting in Morocco. The meeting, which was not open to the press, was held at FIFA’s African headquarters within the Mohammed VI complex in Salé, near Rabat.

FIFA leadership released a statement late in the evening acknowledging that “errors were made after the proposal was leaked to the media.” The statement emphasized that “apologies have been offered for these errors, along with a commitment to ensure they do not happen again.”

Regarding regulatory compliance, the statement admitted that “it was never the intention to exclude the FIFA Council and member associations from the process, and it should have been handled differently,” without explicitly naming Gianni Infantino. It added that “in this specific case, however, it is important to emphasize that although errors were made, everything done was in strict compliance with FIFA’s regulatory framework.”

Top executives rallied to support Gianni Infantino, who has been under fire in recent days. The statement indicated that “the members of the FIFA Council present reaffirmed their full support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino as the sole leader elected by the 211 FIFA member associations.”

The text continued, “With the project abandoned, it is understood that FIFA will no longer tolerate any damage to its integrity, good governance, and respect for due process, and will take all necessary measures to protect and preserve its name and reputation.”

Gianni Infantino, who has been at the helm of the organization for ten years, is currently the only declared candidate for his own succession in the election scheduled for March 2027 in Rabat. He needs a majority of the 211 member federations to secure a final four-year term.
