On Friday, at the Iavoloha State Palace, the Malagasy government signed a memorandum of understanding with two Chinese companies, Jinyuan Holding International Co. Ltd and Suzhou Fuchang Space Technology Co. Ltd, to launch a satellite development program for Madagascar. Under the terms of the agreement, the two Chinese firms will handle the design, manufacturing, launch, and management of a satellite to be made available to Madagascar. The partnership also includes a technology transfer component, involving the training of 40 Malagasy engineers, both civilian and military, specializing in space technologies.
The signing ceremony took place in the presence of the President of the Refoundation, Michael Randrianirina, and several high-ranking officials. The Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Prof. Ndaohialy Manda-Vy Ravonimanantsoa, represented the Ministry of Digital Development, Posts, and Telecommunications.
According to authorities, this satellite program is intended to strengthen the country’s capabilities in several areas, including meteorological monitoring, natural disaster prevention, cartography, telecommunications, as well as the agriculture and blue economy sectors.
During his speech, the Head of State placed this initiative within the digital technology development strategy undertaken by Madagascar, following the deployment of 5G and the testing of Direct-to-Cell technology. He indicated that the country also aims to eventually develop 5.5G technology. Following the signing, Michael Randrianirina called on the stakeholders to quickly fulfill their commitments so that the program can translate into operational achievements.
Founded in July 2018, Fuchang Space Technology is a Chinese aerospace company that designs and manufactures power supply systems for commercial satellites. Jinyuan Holding Group, meanwhile, is a Chinese group with 25 years of history, publicly traded since 2014. It develops activities in construction materials as well as new energy materials, particularly industrial waste treatment and lithium exploitation.
