The political situation in Madagascar remains under close regional surveillance. It was among the topics discussed during the meeting of the Ministerial Committee of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation in Malawi.
Elias Magosi, Executive Secretary of the regional organization, emphasized the need for constant vigilance regarding Madagascar’s path toward constitutional order. During the 28th meeting in Salima, Malawi, he stated that while the region remains peaceful, stability requires sustained cooperation and regional solidarity.
The SADC has reiterated its call for inclusive dialogue, accountability, and respect for human rights in Madagascar. This follows the June 29th Extraordinary Summit, which urged the Malagasy government to commit to transparent reforms and inclusive national consultations.
In response, the current Malagasy authorities, including Colonel Michaël Randrianirina, have emphasized that national consultations are reserved for Malagasy citizens, implicitly excluding figures like former President Andry Rajoelina, whose Malagasy nationality has been revoked. Foreign Minister Alice N’Diaye, leading the Malagasy delegation in Salima, stressed the importance of national leadership and local ownership in the democratic transition process.
