Twenty-two young coaches, including seven women, received their certificates following the “Young Coach” training organized last Saturday by the Diana Regional Basketball League, in collaboration with FIBA Africa Zone 7. This initiative aims to strengthen the technical skills of coaches and promote the development of basketball at the local level.
For one week, two Malagasy experts, led by the National Technical Director (DTN), Angelot Razafiarivony, trained these young basketball coaches who came mainly from Antsiranana, the districts of Ambilobe and Nosy Be, as well as the Sava region. A unique feature of this session was that the 3×3 and 5×5 disciplines were grouped into the same program, allowing trainees to broaden their technical and tactical knowledge.
The number of participants increased compared to previous sessions. The presence of seven young women also testifies to a growing interest among women in basketball coaching.
The session was also marked by the presence of Lucien and Fredette, two historical figures of this discipline in northern Madagascar. With their long experience, they are among the references for basketball in Antsiranana.
At the end of this intensive 44-hour training, the participants left with new knowledge and strengthened skills. Some completed the entire program, illustrating their commitment and desire to progress.
For the National Technical Director, basketball in Antsiranana has promising potential, despite the many difficulties the discipline has faced in recent years. The young coaches are now called upon to pass on the knowledge gained from this training to other young people and to contribute to the renewal of technical management in the region.
Angelot Razafiarivony also has great ambitions for basketball in the North. He believes that future players selected for national youth teams could emerge from Antsiranana. In the longer term, the region could also see one of its technicians reach the rank of national coach.
For his part, the president of FIBA Africa Zone 7, Abel Ntsay, called on the relevant authorities to strengthen and modernize existing sports infrastructure.
