The program “Ny Marina,” broadcast on Antsiva Radio 97.6 FM, is celebrating its thirtieth anniversary. Over these three decades, it has occupied an important place in debates on national affairs.
From October 13, 1996, to October 13, 2026, “Ny Marina,” a program dedicated to debates on politics, society, and the economy in Madagascar, celebrated its 30th anniversary. Ismaël Razafinarivo, whose name remains inseparable from its history, is among its founders. Annick Raherimanana and Nivo Ratiarison also participated in its launch, before being joined by Ralibera Michel.
The creation of “Ny Marina” in 1996 was no coincidence. According to Ismaël Razafinarivo, the turbulent political situation the country was going through at the time prompted them to design a program aimed at explaining events and helping citizens understand national affairs.
“Admiral Didier Ratsiraka, removed from power following the popular movement of 1991, was threatening to return to the country. Meanwhile, the Hery Velona movement was experiencing internal dissensions, with factions led by Professor Albert Zafy, Richard Andriamanjato, and Manandafy Rakotonirina. These tensions led to the impeachment of President Albert Zafy. New political figures, such as Herizo Razafimahaleo and Tovonanahary Rabetsitonta, also emerged, making the situation even more complex. We felt the need to speak out to explain the events and help citizens understand the reality. That is how the program was born,” he recounts.
Over these thirty years, numerous cases have raised questions that, according to Ismaël Razafinarivo, still call for clarification. He cites, in particular, the deaths that occurred during popular movements and the management of loans contracted by the country. These questions have strengthened their determination to continue the program, despite the risks and pressures associated with the topics covered.
“These thirty years have been particularly difficult. The program is broadcast in the evening, and we go home without bodyguards. We address many sensitive topics that may offend the people mentioned. Some think we are hostile to them simply because we expose the facts,” he continues.
He emphasizes that the challenge lies as much in the sensitivity of the subjects as in the possible consequences for the journalists. “It is not easy to face all this, but these difficulties have never made us back down. On the contrary, they encourage us to continue the program for the Malagasy people and for the country. It now flows in my veins,” asserts Ismaël Razafinarivo.
In his view, it is possible to make the truth prevail in the management of public affairs, provided there is the courage and the will to change practices. “One must have the courage to initiate real changes and apply this principle: ‘In state affairs, I do not favor any relative.’ This implies reforming the institutions that need it, adopting good laws, and entrusting the leadership of the country to competent and honest people,” he explains.
Special programming throughout the day on October 13 marked the thirtieth anniversary of “Ny Marina.” Testimonials, exchanges with listeners and political leaders, as well as reflections on the future of the program punctuated this celebration.
After thirty years in the media landscape, the history of “Ny Marina” remains marked by the desire to shed light on national affairs and offer a space for debate. The CEO of the station, Edgard Razafindravahy, also sent a message to the program’s managers and the Antsiva Radio team: “After these thirty years, the program is now entering a new phase: that of putting ‘Ny Marina’ into practice.”
