There is a glimmer of hope for those suffering from renal failure, a disease that has seen exponential growth in recent years. Nephrologists have yet to provide a clear explanation for the cause and origin of this surge, which affects all age groups without any known preventive measures. For many, the condition feels like a death sentence due to the high cost of treatment.
A transplant is the only cure, and India has long been the preferred destination recommended by doctors. While some, like the comedian Eric from the group ‘Fou Hehy’, have returned fully recovered after undergoing a transplant in an Indian clinic, such opportunities remain rare.
The state has constructed a treatment unit in Andohatapenaka, but it remains idle due to a lack of authorization for organ transplants, possibly exacerbated by concerns over organ trafficking. Currently, patients require three dialysis sessions per week, with each session costing at least 400,000 Ariary. Many succumb to the illness simply due to a lack of financial means.
However, a new public-private partnership between the state and an Indian company is expected to significantly reduce the cost of dialysis.
