Traffic was severely disrupted this Tuesday on the National Road RN7 at Ambatofotsy. Transporters, opposing their relocation from the Fasan’ny Karana bus station to the Amoronakona bus station, blocked the road for several hours, causing major traffic jams in both directions. Defense and security forces arrived on the scene to restore traffic flow, using tear gas to disperse the protesters. One person was injured during the demonstration; according to the police, the injuries were caused by stone-throwing.
Taxi-brousses left the Fasan’ny Karana area and reached the RN7, where protesters set up several barricades using stones, tree trunks, and burning tires to block traffic at Ambatofotsy. Banners were also visible at the site. The situation quickly paralyzed traffic, preventing vehicles from moving between this locality and the capital in either direction.
Alerted to the blockage, defense and security forces, including the Police Intervention Force (FIM) and the National Police’s Special Intervention Unit (USI), arrived around 11:30 AM to clear the obstacles. The police reported that protesters threw stones, prompting the use of tear gas for dispersal.
After the protesters were dispersed, an unconscious man was found injured near a barricade and was immediately evacuated to a medical center by a FIP vehicle. While police attribute the injuries to stone-throwing, some protesters claim the individual was hit by a bullet, though this has not been independently confirmed.
Traffic gradually resumed around 12:40 PM. The protest stems from transport cooperatives contesting their mandatory relocation to the Amoronakona station. The Ministry of Transport and Meteorology had previously warned that starting Wednesday, vehicles failing to depart from Amoronakona—unless they possess their own private bus station—would face sanctions.
