BEPC Exam: Candidates absent at Lycée Jean-Joseph Rabearivelo

The BEPC (Brevet d’Études du Premier Cycle) exams at the Lycée Jean-Joseph Rabearivelo examination center in Analakely were marked by the absence of several candidates, attributed to various reasons.

At the Lycée Jean-Joseph Rabearivelo center, 78 candidates were absent out of 1,265 registered for the second day of the BEPC exams. This figure shows a slight increase from the first day, during which 77 absences were recorded.

Despite these absences, center officials remain reassuring. “These absences do not prevent the affected candidates from continuing their exams. They can still show up for the remaining subjects scheduled. In fact, for the BEPC, there is no eliminatory grade. Admission is determined by the total points obtained across all subjects, rather than based on a single exam,” explained Holy Rakotomalala Rabarison, head of the Lycée Jean-Joseph Rabearivelo examination center.

However, behind these figures lie very different realities. A parent shared that her son could not attend the exam because he fell seriously ill the day before. “My son had a high fever. We took him to see a doctor, but his condition did not improve, so we decided not to send him. His father and I decided he could retake the exam next year,” said Nivo, a mother.

Other candidates faced different challenges. “For my part, I had to stop school a month before the exam. My mother fell ill, and I was forced to find odd jobs to help her,” testified a candidate who wished to remain anonymous.

For teachers, these situations reflect a broader reality. Maurice Ratelolahy, a physics and chemistry teacher, notes that several factors explain these absences. “Some candidates give up after encountering difficulties during the first subject or because they feel they no longer have a chance of passing. Others face health, transport, or family constraints. Yet, it is always better to continue the exams until the end,” he explained.

While some candidates have already given up, others still have the opportunity to return to the exam center. In the BEPC, missing one subject does not automatically mean failure. “Every point obtained in the remaining subjects can still contribute to reaching the passing average,” the teacher added.
