Team Sports: Egypt upsets Kenya at the Women’s African Volleyball Championship to secure a ticket to Los Angeles 2028

Twenty-three years after their last triumph, Egypt has returned to the pinnacle of African women’s volleyball. Facing the Kenyan national team, the defending champions and ten-time African winners, the Egyptian side secured a 3-0 victory (25-22, 25-15, 25-15) in the final of the African Women’s Volleyball Championship held this Friday in the host country.

This victory at the Kasarani Arena earns Egypt its fourth continental title, qualification for the 2027 FIVB World Cup, and a direct ticket to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. To reach this summit, the Egyptians controlled the match from start to finish, relying on flawless tactical organization.

After a hard-fought first set (25-22), the Egyptians intensified the pressure, gradually stifling the Kenyans, who were unable to regain the rhythm that had been their strength. Despite the support from the stands, the “Malkia Strikers” never found a solution and were soundly defeated in the following two sets (25-15, 25-15).

This defeat is brutal for Kenya, which entered the final after a near-perfect run of five victories, having conceded only one set. Conversely, Egypt concludes the competition with a memorable flawless record: seven wins in seven matches, 21 sets won, and none conceded to their opponents.

This title also serves as a resounding revenge against the Kenyans, who had beaten them by the same 3-0 score in the 2023 final. By depriving Kenya of another title on home soil, Egypt ends more than two decades of waiting and confirms its major comeback on the international stage.
