Increasing egg consumption among Malagasy households is the goal of the fifth “Egg Festival,” held on Friday, October 2, 2026, in Antanetibe Mahazaza, one of the main egg production hubs in Madagascar. While national consumption is estimated at only 20 eggs per person per year, industry stakeholders are focusing on awareness campaigns to encourage households to incorporate more of this food into their diets.
As a source of protein and essential nutrients, eggs also offer an economic advantage. Their price, generally more affordable than meat, makes them a viable alternative for households looking to diversify their diet at a lower cost. The festival aims to raise awareness of their nutritional qualities and stimulate demand in the local market.
There is also an economic stake for producers. In Antanetibe Mahazaza, approximately 300,000 eggs are produced daily, with a large portion destined for the Antananarivo market. An increase in consumption could help expand market opportunities for farmers and support the development of the poultry sector.
Presided over by the Minister of Livestock, Riana Nantenaina Randrianomenjanahary, the event also featured the establishment of a joint station bringing together police officers, gendarmes, and tax officials. This initiative aims to strengthen coordination between the various stakeholders in the field.
Promoting modern livestock farming, improving farmers’ incomes, and strengthening local production are also key issues highlighted during this edition. By promoting egg consumption, industry stakeholders seek to reconcile the nutritional needs of households with the development of livestock activities.
