Ethiopia has officially submitted its bid to host the 2028 edition of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The announcement was made on Monday evening by the Ethiopian Football Federation, more than eight months after its initial declaration of intent to host the event.
“Ethiopia has officially submitted its bid” to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) “to host AFCON 2028,” the Ethiopian Football Federation wrote on X on Monday evening, confirming support from the federal government led by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. The federation added that the bid “meets all requirements and reaffirms that the country is fully prepared to host Africa’s biggest football event.”
The Horn of Africa nation last hosted the continental competition in 1976. Currently ranked 143rd (out of 211) in the FIFA rankings, its last participation in the AFCON dates back to the 2021 edition in Cameroon, where the team was eliminated in the first round.
The most recent AFCON took place this winter in Morocco. The next edition in 2027 will be co-hosted by three East African countries: Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. The subsequent AFCON will take place in 2028, and thereafter every four years instead of every two, to align with the periodicity of other FIFA competitions.
