It has been one year since the Regional Director of National Education (DREN) for Atsimo Andrefana, Etsimifaho, resigned alongside all other regional directors in the country, following the political events that shook Madagascar. Since then, the position has remained vacant. Not a month goes by without protests being organized in front of the DREN offices, sometimes to claim various teachers’ rights, and other times to demand the payment of arrears.
“The current Secretary General of the Ministry of National Education is a staff member from the Atsimo Andrefana DREN. When he was appointed to this position, our hope rested on him to accelerate the appointment of a new regional director. But so far, no name has been announced,” a pedagogical advisor stated yesterday.
Calls for expressions of interest have been launched, and about a dozen applications deemed valid have been registered. Despite two changes at the head of the ministry within a year, the region is still waiting for its DREN. Atsimo Andrefana is thus among the last regions in the country still deprived of a regional director.
While awaiting an appointment, non-civil servant teachers and temporary staff hope for the integration or reconsideration of their situations and are counting on the next DREN to advance their files. Hundreds of signatures are waiting for this elusive candidate.
