ADMINISTRATION – Housing allowance for Antananarivo Urban Commune employees increased to 64,000 Ariary

The housing allowance for employees of the Urban Commune of Antananarivo (CUA) has increased from 14,000 to 64,000 Ariary per month, representing an upward adjustment of 50,000 Ariary. This measure affects nearly 4,000 municipal agents and follows the central government’s decision to increase housing allowances for public servants. However, while allowances for state employees or local government agents funded by the general budget have risen to as much as 200,000 Ariary, those for employees of decentralized local authorities are limited by the financial capacity of the communes.

According to Feno Ralambomanana, President of the Special Delegation of the CUA, the municipality cannot exceed this amount. “The Commune’s own resources do not currently allow for a higher allowance,” he stated. Jean François Raharijaona, President of the Union of Employees of the Urban Commune of Antananarivo (SMKAR), also acknowledged that “the 50,000 Ariary increase is the only raise that the Commune’s budget currently permits.”

During discussions between city officials and unionized agents, it was decided that the increase would be applied retroactively from July, with back pay scheduled starting this month. The payment of the adjusted allowance will then be gradually integrated into the agents’ salaries.
