In Ampanasina, a local group has been granted a management transfer to preserve marine and coastal ecosystems.
While Transfers of Natural Resource Management (TGRN) are widespread, Transfers of Fisheries Resource Management (TGRH) remain relatively scarce or underdeveloped. This highlights the need to strengthen the involvement of fishing communities in the sustainable management of marine and coastal resources.
In the DIANA region, where seafood is a vital source of income and subsistence, the development of TGRH is crucial. By empowering local fishermen to manage their environment, the initiative promotes responsible exploitation, compliance with fishing regulations, and the preservation of marine ecosystems.
A notable example is the management transfer recently granted to the “Vondron’ny Mpanjono Mateza Ampanasina” (VMMA), a fishermen’s group in Ampanasina, Ambodibonare commune, Ambilobe district. This initiative, supported by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) through the SWIO Fisheries 2 project, aims to place fishing communities at the heart of conservation efforts in Ambaro Bay.
The two-year renewable agreement was officially signed in the presence of regional and district authorities. Théogène Belahy, Director of Economic Development for the Diana region, emphasized that expanding TGRH is essential for regional development, as environmental protection remains a top priority.
Beyond official recognition, the beneficiaries received equipment to support their duties, including life jackets for community surveillance agents and a 15 HP outboard motor to facilitate daily patrols.
