Criminal hearings resumed on Monday at the Bangui court after a nearly two-year hiatus, a delay attributed to financial difficulties, according to judicial authorities. This interruption led to a backlog of cases awaiting trial and extended pre-trial detention for many defendants, officials stated during a press briefing. To mark the resumption, approximately thirty cases will be examined.
“This delay is primarily linked to the economic context, which did not allow for the timely mobilization of necessary resources. It is not a malfunction of the Court of Appeal,” Jean Vidal Damas, Prosecutor General at the Bangui Court of Appeal, explained to AFP.
A few days earlier, Minister of Justice Arnaud Djoubaye Abazene explained that this session also aims to relieve congestion in Bangui’s prisons, which are suffering from overcrowding. The thirty cases under review include violent crimes, rape, economic crimes—such as embezzlement of public funds—as well as cases involving attempts to undermine state security.
