In a statement released yesterday, the Ministry of Justice announced the suspension of three magistrates from the Antananarivo Anti-Corruption Pole (PAC). The ministry cited professional misconduct, specifically failures in case management and a lack of adherence to their inherent responsibilities, as the reasons for this decision.
The decision was reached by the PAC Monitoring and Evaluation Committee (CSE) following inspections by the Judicial Control Office and consultations with Supreme Court leadership. According to the law, this suspension is provisional and will last for a maximum of six months while disciplinary investigations are conducted.
The Ministry of Justice emphasized that laws and regulations governing judicial and prison personnel are applied with rigor and impartiality. Meanwhile, the Syndicate of Magistrates of Madagascar (SMM) recently republished a 2022 statement regarding pressures and threats faced by magistrates, highlighting ongoing concerns about judicial independence.
Additionally, the Ministry announced the suspension of fifteen prison officers at the Imerintsiatosika high-security prison following an escape incident on August 7. The escaped detainee has since been recaptured.
